Great First Day!

We had a wonderful first day with your children today!  It was so nice to have them back at school!    Here is a link to an article that you may find helpful in talking with your children about their school day! It is titled:

Welcome Back!

Dear Spofford Pond Students and Families,

Welcome back to the new school year! The teachers and I are very excited to see your children on the first day of school! It is always a very special time of many new beginnings!   With the new year, I have much “news” to share with you about staffing and programs offered for students. However, as many of you may have watched over the summer—our school now has a new roof! We are very excited and thankful to the community for this much needed upgrade! However, I do want to let you know that while 95% of the project is at it’s completion stage, we do have about 5% more that will be completed in the coming weeks. This work will not have an impact on student safety, teaching or learning. Thank you all for your understanding while we await the final touches to our beautiful new green roof!

With regard to staffing, I am pleased to warmly welcome our new staff members who will be terrific additions to our Spofford Pond staff. We have several new staff at Spofford Pond School and they are:

                                                                                                                                                                  Mrs. Kristin Pepp

ESL Teacher

Mrs. Pepp has most recently worked for the neighboring community of Georgetown as an ESL teacher. She has earned her Master of Education from Lesley University.

Mrs. Meredith Winchell

Art Teacher

Mrs. Winchell comes to us from our sister community, Middleton where she was an art teacher since 2001. Mrs. Winchell has earned her Master of Arts in Teaching from Salem State University.

New Science Program:

We have a new science program in our school this year. I have outlined this exciting program for you below:

Massachusetts adopted new science standards in April of 2016. Those new standards are expected to begin the implementation process this coming school year. The Tri-town Science Committee has been working over the past three years to help prepare for this implementation. They researched programs, viewed sales presentations, piloted programs and then after much analysis and discussion, decided that the McGraw Hill program is the best fit for us. Inspire Science by McGraw Hill will be used in grades K-5. I Science will be used in Grade 6.

Below is a link to the new Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Frameworks. Here you will find the frameworks and FAQ’s that you might find helpful.

Arrival & Dismissal

Our morning arrival and afternoon dismissal procedures have remained the same. However, for dismissal, it is important that parents stay in the car line. Parents should not be parking and getting out of cars during dismissal to pick up their child. Walking through the line of cars is a safety-risk and can cause confusion with the car lines. I will be outside during dismissal to monitor student and car safety. We will work diligently to allow for a quick, efficient and safe dismissal.

I have some homework for parents before the first day of school:

  1. Please also check the bus routes on the school website:

  1. Please also update (if needed) your My School Bucks (Nutri-Kids) account online to ensure that is set up for your child’s lunch (if they will be purchasing lunch).

I thank you and our School Committee for the continued support of our school. We are very excited about the new staff and programs that are provided to us. I look forward to a successful and rigorous learning year with your children.
