“Assets” represent the building blocks for thriving youth, families, and community —- everyday things that anyone can do to support our youth … and everyone can be an “Asset Builder”!
Internal Asset Category: Positive Identity
The way kids (or anyone, for that matter) feel about themselves can fluctuate with circumstances. Depending on what’s happening, young people may feel confident or unsure, optimistic or pessimistic, in control or not in control. These ups and downs are normal. What’s important is what a young person’s identity is like most of the time. If kids have a sense of their self-worth, power, purpose and promise, they are more likely to feel hopeful and optimistic, and believe they can make a difference even when difficulties arise.
Asset Tip: Catch your child “doing something right”. Help children learn to focus on their strengths by pointing out to them all the different things they can do.
