Tri-Town Council asks…What’s in YOUR lifepack? Fill it with Assets!

“Assets” represent the building blocks for thriving youth, families, and community —- everyday things that anyone can do to support our youth … and everyone can be an “Asset Builder”!

SUPPORT in the form of caring, loving and/or encouraging relationships with trusted adults is SO important for kids that there’s a WHOLE ASSET CATEGORY dedicated to it!

AND the TTC Asset Connection is…Asset #2: Positive family communication – Parent(s) and child communicate positively, respectfully, openly and frequently. Child feels comfortable seeking advice and counsel from parent(s).

TTC Asset Tip: DOORS*. Communication has a lot to do with doors: open doors, closed doors, and sometimes slammed doors…When communicating with your child, have an open door — meaning an open attitude and mind where you can take time to listen non-judgmentally.

Tips for door opening:

  • Make time for your child to express concerns, grievances, excitement, wants, needs and opinions.
  • Plan weekly or monthly family meetings where everyone can discuss upcoming plans, celebrations, concerns etc.
  • Lightheartedness opens doors and keeps them open! Plan a surprise celebration and wear a silly hat or play a silly game together.
