From the School Nurse’s Office:

Opt-Out of Health Screenings Letter

As school nurses, we work to support your child’s overall health and well-being, as countless research studies support the connection between good health and learning outcomes. We are here to help you and your child understand health-related growth and development. During the next few months, we will be conducting the Massachusetts state-mandated screenings for vision and hearing. Children who wear glasses should be sure they have them in school. Not every screening is administered in every grade level; see the grade level designation for each screening area below.

In addition to vision and hearing, as mandated by the state of Massachusetts, all students in grade 1, 4, 7, 10 will have their height and weight measured to be used to calculate their body mass index (BMI). BMI is a screening tool to determine whether a child is potentially underweight or overweight. Your child’s BMI is based on the ratio of height to weight and reported as a percentile ranking considering the child’s age and gender. The CDC created these rankings to identify children who may be at specific health risks, such as insulin resistance, and heart disease.

All medical information is kept strictly confidential. Parents and legal guardian may request in writing that their child not participate in screening, BMI determination and/or head checks for lice. Please fill out the Opt-Out form should you wish to opt-out of any of the above screenings.

  LITTLE RED SCHOOLHOUSE

LITTLE RED SCHOOLHOUSE

Restoration Update

(Boxford, Massachusetts)

In late April, during the initial interior demolition phase at the Little Red Schoolhouse, asbestos was discovered.  As asbestos can be a significant health risk and must be properly abated prior to construction, the building was closed following that discovery and sealed until appropriate abatement had occurred.

We are happy to report that the abatement contractor was able to accommodate our tight schedule to remove the asbestos as close to the start of the school year thereby minimizing impact and risk. The abatement has now concluded and the building can now be entered thus planned construction may begin.

We are grateful to the Little Red Schoolhouse Committee, the Boxford Selectmen, the Boxford Finance Committee and the Boxford Health Department for their help and collaboration to resolve this issue.

Please look for our table at Apple Fest on September 21, 2019.

The Friends of the Little Red Schoolhouse is an organization working to restore the historic one-room schoolhouse building located at 26 Middleton Road.

YMCA Program–Help Wanted

The YMCA program at The Cole School is looking to add an additional staff member (or two) to its before and/or after school staff team. This is a great way to spend some low key time with a fun group of kids while making some extra money.

This is a part time position that would take up 10 hours a week from a time frame of 6:45am-8:45am for the morning program and from 2:45-6:00pm for the after school program. Your primary responsibility would to be help supervise and engage with the kids that come to the before school program. That would include everything from playing games, assisting with crafts and projects to helping with homework.

It’s a great way to get to know some really fun kids while getting your day started and earning a little extra on the side.

If you’re interested at all or want to find out more about the position please reach out the site coordination Matt Corsetti. You can reach him via e-mail at mcorsetti@mvymca.org or phone at 978-479-9765.
